Flushing is one of the neighborhoods in the north-central region in the New York City, New York borough of Queens. The neighborhood is the fourth-largest Central Business District located in New York City. Downtown Flushing is a major commercial and retail zone located on Main Street. Roosevelt Avenue is the third busiest intersection in New York City, behind Times Square and Herald Square.
Flushing was founded as a settlement in New Netherlands on October 10, 1645. It was situated along the east bank of Flushing Creek. The town was Vlissingen after Vlissingen, and the Dutch town was Vlissingen. The English were in charge of New Amsterdam in 1664, and when Queens County was founded in 1683, the “Town of Flushing” was one of the first five towns in Queens. It was in 1898 that Flushing became part of The City of New York. The growth began in the first half of the 20th century and included bridges and public transport. Immigrants, mostly Chinese and Koreans, arrived in Flushing during the latter half of the 20th century. Flushing is situated in Queens Community District 7 with ZIP codes 11354 and 1135, and 11358. It is monitored by New York Police Department’s 109th Precinct.
Today, Flushing is establishing its position as an internationally renowned “melting pot,” predominantly drawing people from Asia, especially from the different provinces of China, and newcomers from all over the globe. Flushing Chinatown is centered around Main Street and the west area, particularly on Roosevelt Avenue, which has become the principal nexus of Flushing Chinatown.
Cultural Enclaves
In the 1970s and 1970s, the Chinese community was established in the Flushing area, with predominantly non-Hispanic white demographics. Taiwanese started the surge in immigrants, followed by different communities of Chinese. An estimate from 1986 by The Flushing Chinese Business Association was 60 000 Chinese from Flushing alone. In 1990, Asians comprised 41 percent of the Flushing area, and Chinese comprised 41 percent of the Asian population. A&E NYC Plumbing
The East Flushing area, technically within Greater Flushing, also houses a large Chinese community and the majority of Downtown Flushing. It is worth noting that East Flushing also substantially contains Irish, Greek, Russian, Italian, and Jewish communities as well as communities of Indians and Sri Lankans, Malaysians, as well as Hispanics, predominantly Colombians, in addition to Salvadorans. The neighborhood is more diverse in appearance as compared to Downtown Flushing because of the more uniform distribution of communities of East Flushing residents resulting in the presence of more ethnic-based companies catering to the various communities in contrast to the dominant presence of Chinese and a lesser degree, Korean companies in Downtown Flushing.
